Top 5 Things People Forget When Moving

January 4, 2017

There are a lot of working pieces during a move. From packing belongings to coordinating movers, it is a very busy time. When you’re busy, sometimes things fall through the cracks. Here are some of the top things people forget during their move that you shouldn’t. Read the tips from your local Denver moving company below:

1. An Overnight and Essentials Kit

The night and day of your move, everything is most likely packed and ready to go. During this time period, there are essentials that you might need access to the morning of your move, or items you need to get to quickly, like a change of clothes, toothbrushes, glasses or contacts, cell phone chargers and water. Also, make sure you have essentials with you too, from a first aid kit and snacks to moving supplies to help you finish packing or unpack boxes.

2. To Call the Utility Companies

When arriving to your new home, you will want to make sure you have worked with the utility companies before. This will allow you to make sure everything you need is turned on, from the power and lights to cable and internet. Contact all the companies you will need to reach out to in advance to coordinate the best time to turn these utilities on that fit your budget. Also, be sure to warn the utility companies at your old place of residence that you are moving and those utilities need to be turned off.

3. Change Addresses and Billing Addresses

Often people change their address with the United States Postal Service and bills post-move. A few months before your move, start paying attention to every single bill and important item you get in the mail. Make note of it to come back to after your move and update your address. Next, you will need to make sure your mail is routed to your new home pre-move. A few weeks before your move, kick things off by contacting USPS to change your address. Learn more about changing your address. You will be able to choose your move date so that all mail is directed to your new address. Be sure to let your employer know of your move as well so tax forms can be updated.

4. Secure Their Liquids

During a move, it is easy to toss items in boxes. In many cases, this is okay! But when it comes to various types of liquids, they could leak and get messy. Make sure you take precautions to prevent this or keep spills contained. One of the best ways to do this is to use plastic wrap under each cap. You can also put all bottles within plastic bags to contain leaks.

5. Do A Final Walk Through

When leaving, make sure you do a final walk-through of your soon-to-be old home. Look for small things such as keys, garage door openers and other valuables. Be sure to check every cabinet and drawer just in case you left something behind.
